Once again I completely lapsed in my promise to update this here thing once in a while. Oops. I feel like writing a bit tonight, though, and don't have anyone to talk to in person, so here goes.

I miss the magic that seems to exists when I first start getting to know someone special. Every telephone call, email, im, whatever gives a little jolt of adrenaline.

I also haven't really met any new people in a long time. Met as in socially, not work-related. I should do something about that, but I'm not sure what at the moment.

It would be even better if I could take care of both things at once, of course, but I'm patient. Sometimes.

I decided to finally start working out starting today. I'm more out of shape than I thought. I figured I'd start on the beginner end of "intermediate". Today was some cardio (biking) then upper body work. Holy crap! My arms seemed almost useless.

I feel good, though. Got my heart rate up for a bit and did pretty good with the weights (didn't hurt myself, anyway). Tomorrow is cardio and core/abs. That should be even more interesting, as I know that part of me is NOT in shape.

I'm feeling pretty good this morning. I slept better last night than I have in a while. The writing thing helps. That is all for now.

This weekend was disappointing. I was looking forward to brewing Saturday. I had everything set, had plenty of time, it was a nice day and it was going to yield ten gallons of wonderful berliner weisse!

I gathered up all the equipment, cleaned everything, got my water ready, went to get the propane tank for the burner and realized it was empty! My dad had run out of propane in the grill and used my tank, leaving the empty one for me! Arg!

If it was up to me I would have used the one in the grill, but dinner was being grilled in a short while and I didn't think everyone else would understand.

It's so sad. Hopefully I'll manage to have the time and energy to do it this week sometime.

No Beer Love
I was planning on brewing an ordinary bitter today as my first batch of 2008. I got out the equipment, hooked up with propane burner to start heating water, turned on the valves and... nothing. Nothing would flow from the propane tank. Crap. After several minutes of trying various things (OPD reset, checking for blockage, etc.) I gave up. Guess I'll have to swap it, even though it's nearly half full.

Damn. I decided I'd finally bottle my batch of flanders red. I dug out enough bottles and was starting to sanitize things when I pulled the cardboard box I had set over it (to block light) off and discovered a new layer of something growing in it. It's been going since August! It smells better than ever, but I wanna DRINK IT!

Anyway, on SATURDAY, MARCH 22 I'm going to be doing some brewing. I'm planning on starting one batch around 6:30-ish, but if people wanted to come over earlier we could maybe do two batches (or three) or just hang out and drink and maybe grill some meat.

I wanted to purchase a couple things from an online homebrew shop, so I went ahead and did it... and ended up also buying ingredients for a Belgian Saison and Berliner Weiss. It's too easy to get carried away.

I'm making Peanut Butter Snack Bread:

1 cup + 2 tablespoons milk
1/3 cup peanut butter
1 egg
3 cups bread flour
2 tablespoons sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon yeast
3/4 cup chopped peanuts

I'm hoping it turns out as good as it smells. The cinnamon braid I made last week was great. I only got to have small chunk of it before it was gone.

This Year's Garden
Here's what I'm going to try growing this year.  I also have a plan to keep other animals from eating everything - I'm inviting the Michigan Militia to use the yard as a training center this summer.

Long Red Cayenne Pepper (shocked these when I moved them outside last year)
Chamomile ('Cause they're cute.  These might be for sale in the Thrift Shop)
Garlic Chives (Yummy.  Something ate these last year)
Cippolini Onions (These are also cute)
Spicy Globe Basil (Great for growing in containers)
Boston Pickling Cucumbers (I didn't even have enough cucumbers to bother picking last year.  Oddly one of the few things that didn't get eaten)
Tiny Tim Tomatoes (Grows 10-15 inches tall and makes lots of sweet little tomatoes)
Victoria Rhubarb (I miss having rhubarb around.  We had a HUGE rhubarb plant when I was a kid)

There's a bunch of other things I would like to grow but it depends on growing space.  I might also grow
Chinese Pink Garlic (need I say anything?)
Potatoes (probably in a big container)
Broccoli (anyone grow any around here?  How does it do?)
Cabbage (sauerkraut.  Mmm...)

And who knows what else.

Current Mood: Ambitious
